Cape Breton’s Sydney Speedway has a new name. Track owners Lynden MacDougall and Kyle MacKinnon have changed the facility’s name back to it’s original, Bud’s Speedway.

“We wanted to rebrand so the community would know that the speedway is under new local ownership.. We thought it was only right to honour our great friend Bud Greer, whom we have to thank for this great facility.”  said MacDougall.

After purchasing the track in 2021,  Lynden and Kyle were planning on a name change almost immediately, but wanted to wait until more renovations were complete.

“We waited just over a year to announce this because we had a lot of work that we wanted to get done before we held our grand reopening event.”

Bud Greer built the speedway in 1976 and wasn’t aware of the owners’ plan to rename it after him.

“Bud wasn’t aware until we announced it to the public. We wanted to keep this a secret from him so it was a nice surprise when he found out.”

August 6 is the Grand Re-Opening featuring a full card of racing along with the Maritime All Star Sportsman Tour.

“We still have some more exciting details to announce soon, but along with the Sportsman tour, we’ll have the Napa Auto Parts Mini Stocks, the Saf-Way Auto Parts V6 Thunder, the Mallard Electric 4 Cylinder Hobby Stocks, and a Bandolero exhibition.  We also invited the Street Stock division as they’ve showed some interest in wanting to make a comeback. We are hoping to have a good car count for each division and hoping to put on a great show!  We’re going to have some giveaways for the fans and will also have some new Bud’s Speedway merchandise available in the canteen.  We have lots of upgrades to get done and we are very excited to have everyone come out and enjoy the show.”
