SYDNEY, NS – Stock car racing is back in Cape Breton Island this weekend with the return of roaring engines and screeching tires to Sydney Speedway. The oval on Grand Lake Road has been a hive of activity over recent weeks as officials have been preparing the facility for this opening weekend. Two days of motorsports action will greet fans at the oval, with five unique divisions racing over the weekend along with a Demolition and Endurance Race to close the card on Sunday. The action begins on Saturday afternoon, July 27th at 4 pm with an autograph session at 3:30 pm. Sunday’s racing sees the green flag at 12 pm.

The oval will see the INEX sanctioned racing on both Saturday and Sunday with the return of the Legend cars and the debut in Cape Breton for the Bandolero division. Both are turn-key, spec race cars fabricated by US Legend Cars International in Harrisburg, North Carolina and are popular with both fans and drivers alike throughout North America and beyond! With the two events this weekend for both classes serving as National Qualifiers, there are big National point implications on the line along with provisional eligibility for INEX Asphalt Nationals for Legend competitors. Could an Asphalt Nationals title at Carteret County Speedway in Swansboro, North Carolina begin with a win at Sydney Speedway? You’ll have to be at the Speedway to find out!

Danny Chisholm (Canning, NS) will be looking to sweep the weekend of INEX racing. Chisholm, who has a long list of accomplishment in a Bandolero in the Maritimes, will be looking to take home both the Colbourne Ford Legend INEX National Qualifiers and the Steve Lewis Bandolero INEX National Qualifiers. Dylan Dowe (Bedford, NS) will also be looking to race the double, competing in 150 feature laps between the Bandolero and Legend car over the two days.

Kody Quinn (Sydney, NS) will attempt to pull a double of his own. The 2016 Sydney Speedway Mini Stock champion will run both end of the Veterans for Healing Twin 75s for the Passione Flooring & Interiors East Coast Mini Stock Tour along with the pair of Colbourne Ford Legend INEX National Qualifiers. In total, Quinn will have 250 laps in his sights around his home track if all pans out his way.

Fans can expect to see up and coming young talent in the Steve Lewis Bandolero class like Austin Tanner (Shubenacadie, NS), former Scotia Speedworld Beginner Bandolero champion Brooke Dowe (Bedford, NS) and more. Father and son duo Brad and Devin Wadden (Hammonds Plains, NS) will head to Sydney to challenge local favorite Donnie Garnier (Sydney, NS) and more in the Colbourne Ford Legend division. More drivers are being added daily and the entry list is subject to change without notice.

The PPM Incorporated Street Stocks and Late Model Sportsman classes will play support on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. These divisions will be using this weekend as not only a chance to shake off the rust but also to tune-up for the Thanksgiving Weekend finale where cars counts and purses are expected to swell. Before they talk turkey in October though, they have the business of racing to get down to this weekend.

The Speedway will close off the weekend with a bang. The Demolition and Endurance events have created quite the pre-event buzz and could easily steal the show on Sunday afternoon. Demolition and Endurance competitors will compete in four qualifying events – the Dash for Cash, Barrell Race, Backup Race, and Powderpuff Race. The two headlining events are a 100-lap Endurance Race and a final Demolition Derby. These events will take place 20 minutes following the stock car racing action on Sunday afternoon.

The Passione Flooring & Interiors East Coast Mini Stock Tour will be anchoring the racing action on both days with Round Three and Four of their cross Maritime Series. The Veterans for Healing Twin 75s are expected to bring upwards of 20 Honda Mini Stock drivers to Sydney to compete for the prestigious checkered flags and championship points that are on the line both days.
