Sportsman Special Headlines Sunday Show at Speedway 660 June 30, 2022 Regional The Late Model Sportsman division takes center stage on the Canada Day Long Weekend at Speedway 660 with an extended distance 100-lap feature on tap for Sunday. The annual Urquhart Construction Firecracker 100 is a test of driver and machine as they compete against others for the checkered flag and a coveted trip to Riverview Ford Lincoln Victory Lane in the iconic race for the class. The Shur-Fit Auto Parts, Bumper to Bumper Street Stock, and Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter divisions will continue their championship. Racing on Sunday begins at 2 pm. The Urquhart Construction Firecracker 100 will put the Late Model Sportsman division to the test. The O’Blenis sisters show the way in the point standings with Alexandra leading her younger sister Courtney (both of Boundary Creek, NB) by just four points. While Alexandra has the point lead, she has yet to win a feature at Speedway 660 this season. Consistency has put the No. 74 at the top of the heap while two wins by Courtney have put the No. 48c well within the discussion for a season-long title. Richard Atkinson (Geary, NB), who has two straight podium finishes, has momentum heading into the longest race of the season for the class while top rookie Caleb Urquhart (Harvey, NB) scored his first top-five finish one week ago. Drew Greenlaw (Eastport, ME) has two Late Model Sportsman wins in three starts and will look to race to a third win this weekend. He will be challenged by several others who will look to make their first starts at Speedway 660 in 2022. Brady Creamer (Miramichi, NB) is among those already looking at celebrating the long weekend with a win in the Geary woods on Sunday. Michael Cormier (Grand-Barachois, NB) finds himself in firm control of the Shur-Fit Auto Parts, Bumper to Bumper Street Stock points with three wins for his No. 68 car in four races and a second-place finish in the other event. Where there is youth comes experience and Rich Cashol (Saint John, NB) provides plenty of the latter in this battle. Cashol is keeping Cormier in his crosshairs and only sits 13 points behind the reigning Maritime Street Stock Series champion after four events. BJ Gillespie (Harvey, NB) drove to the win in a non-point Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooters feature last Saturday night in the Geary woods. While he remains 13 points behind Daniel Atyeo (Chipman, NB), he carries momentum from that victory not only into this week but into the month of July. With the Gunslinger 50 taking place on July 9th, this Saturday’s 25-lap feature could go a long way in painting the picture for next week’s big show. Alex Gallant, Mitchell Harvey, and Randy Titus complete the top five in points early in the 2022 season. For the sixth straight season, children aged 15 and under will be admitted to the grandstands for free to every stock car event at Speedway 660. The admission structure makes it easier for families to attend race events at the track and received positive feedback from fans when implemented mid-season in 2017. Adult grandstand admission prices are $20 (aged 16 and up). Pit admission is $25 and is restricted to those 16 years of age and older. Tickets are available at the gate on race day. New in 2022, all those entering the pit gates must complete their insurance waiver online prior to heading to the track. This can be done on any smartphone and takes seconds to complete. The link to the form can be found on Speedway660.com under the “Race Team Information” menu or by going to Speedway660.speedwaiver.com Pit gates for competitors will open at 1 pm on Saturday, and grandstand gates open for spectators at 5 pm with racing getting underway at 6:30 pm. A complete race day format will be available via the track’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/Speedway660.
