The much anticipated SpeedWeekend 2016 is about to get underway at Speedway 660 in Geary, New Brunswick. One of Canada’s most prestigious short-track racing events will showcase the best Pro Stock and Sportsman drivers in eastern North America. “We’ve had an unbelievable response from race teams for the Sportsman and Pro Stock races and without a doubt fans are going to see Atlantic Canada’s best racing of the year during SpeedWeekend,” said Speedway 660’s Max Roy. “We’re excited to have new marketing partners on board for the two big races and our staff and volunteers are working hard to prepare Speedway 660 for this weekend and to ensure race fans have a great experience.” Almost 40 race teams have pre-registered for the McLaughlin Roof Trusses 250. A virtual who’s who from Speedway 660’s weekly Pro Stock Division, the Pro All Star Series and the Maritime Pro Stock Tour will attempt to qualify for the big race. Greg Fahey, the 2016 Re/Max Group Four Realty Pro Stock Champion, will lead the local contingent of drivers. Cassius Clark, a two-time winner of the race, headlines drivers from south of the border, while Craig Slaunwhite, one of only two Nova Scotia drivers to win the race, will lead a strong group of drivers from the Parts for Trucks Tour, which also includes this year’s Atlantic Cat 250 winner Cole Butcher. Cole Butcher, from Porters Lake, Nova Scotia won the Parts for Trucks Pro Stock race at Speedway 660 last year. Cole also won this year’s Atlantic Cat 250 and will be looking for another 250 win on SpeedWeekend. “The MacLaughlin Roof Trusses 250 is an open pro stock race and the competition is always fierce because we get the very best Maritime Pro Stock drivers and a strong group of Americans too” said Fahey. “I really enjoy racing against great competition like that and hopefully we can ride the momentum we had during the last month right into victory lane on Sunday night.” Cassius Clark, who won the McLaughlin Roof Trusses 250 last year, will be back for another run. Ben Rowe, Joey Doiron, Johnny Clark, Glen Luce, Trevor Sanborn, Kirk Thibeau and Joey Polewarczyk are some of the other Americans making the trip to Speedway 660 this weekend. “It’s one of the toughest races of the year and we’re looking forward to coming to 660 to try to win it in back to back years and for the third time over-all” said Cassius Clark. “I’ve raced against the Maritime Pro Stock Tour drivers a lot this year and they are very competitive and the Re/Max Pro Stock weekly drivers are really strong on their home track.” Cassius Clark, a two time 250 winner, was back in the Geary Woods in early June and went to victory lane in this year’s Best of the Best 150. Clark had an intense battle with Greg Fahey on the way to the checkered flag. The McLaughlin Roof Trusses 250 is one of the richest short-track races in Canada. The winner pockets $15,000, there’s over $15,000 in Contingency Awards and the total purse tops $85,000. More than $110,000 in prize money is available to drivers during SpeedWeekend. The weekend racing schedule is highlighted by the A.E. McKay Builders Sportsman 150 on Saturday evening and the McLaughlin Roof Trusses Pro Stock 250 on Sunday. This Friday at 7PM everyone is invited to Speedway 660 for a free infield party, corn-boil, and concert with country-rock band Mucky Fingers. It’s a perfect way to kick-off SpeedWeekend! Racing gets underway Saturday at 6:30PM with qualifying heats for the A.E. McKay Builders Sportsman 150. There will be a lot of strong contenders in the Sportsman race including the 2016 Martin’s Home Heating Champion Ryan Messer, Drew Greenlaw who was second in points and Rookie of the Year Award winner Jacob Logan. Veteran driver Dave O’Blenis, a four-time winner of the race, will also compete. Several visiting drivers, including Colby Smith, Laurie Cormier, Luc Bourgeois and Jordan Vienotte will head to Speedway 660 for the Sportsman race as well. On Saturday evening fans will also see the Upper Clements Parks Maritime League of Legends Tour, presented by Atlantic Tiltload and the Atlantic Modified Tour, presented by Tucker Appraisals. Fifteen year old Ryan Messer will lead a group of impressive young Speedway 660 stars onto the track Saturday night. Messer, the 2016 Martins Home Heating Sportsman champion, is looking to cap off his season with a trip to victory lane in the A.E. McKay Builders 150. Qualifying for the McLaughlin Roof Trusses 250 gets underway at 2PM on Sunday. Fans will also see the Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooters, the DMR Auto Sales Street Stocks and the Bando Blast presented by Tim’s Corner Motorsports. Once the qualifying and the supporting class features are complete, the 250 takes the green flag at 7PM Sunday night. There are still a few campsites available for the weekend. Fans interested in booking one of those sites or purchasing advance SpeedWeekend event tickets are encouraged to call the Speedway 660 race line at 506-454-7223. Businesses interested in sponsoring Contingency Awards, including laps in the 250, are also invited to call the race line.
