Newman Cleared to Resume Driving Duties in No. 6 April 28, 2020 NASCAR Ryan Newman has been cleared by doctors and NASCAR to return to the drivers seat in the No. 6 at Roush Racing. Newman has been recovering from a bruised brain sustained in a horrific crash during the Daytona 500 on February 16. Because of the COVID-19 pause in the NASCAR season, Newman will miss just three races. Ross Chastain filled driving duties in those races. “I’m excited and thankful, all at the same time.” Newman told FOX Sports on Sunday. “I’m healthy, I’ve been blessed with another layer of this situation giving me more time to heal and look forward to being back in the seat, for sure.” While there has been no official announcement, industry insiders are expecting NASCAR to resume in late May with a revised schedule that will see all races post during the shutdown made up in a busy June that will see weekday and weekend racing. The early events will likely be fanless. Speculation is that NASCAR could announce it’s plan to restart as soon as this week.
