McMurray, Logano On Front Row For Martinsville

Car number one will start from position number one, as Jamie McMurray had the fastest qualifying time on Virginia Lottery Pole Day at Martinsville Speedway.

McMurray will lead the field to green Sunday for the start of the Goody’s® Headache Relief Shot® 500.

“We tested here a couple of weeks ago and I thought we had one of the best tests that I had been a part of,” McMurray said. “This is a great track for me and we had a really good test. When things are going well you get excited to come back to the track.”

Joey Logano’s second place qualifying effort was the highest among the eight drivers remaining in the Eliminator Round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

“I feel like the last couple of years especially we’ve been able to figure out what we need to go fast here,” Logano said. “This is definitely one of those racetracks where it’s usually the same guys that run fast here, every single year.”

Matt Kenseth will start third. Tony Stewart, who along with McMurray did not make the Chase for the Sprint Cup, will start fourth. Denny Hamlin rounds out the top five. Brad Keselowski, who secured his spot in the Eliminator Round by winning last week, will start sixth.

As a driver out of title contention, McMurray said if you want to be talked about, you have to win.

“You run in the top-five all day long and you probably don’t get the recognition as you would if it was the first round of races instead of the Chase,” McMurray said. “So, it’s important to win a little more now than it would be six months ago or so.”

Chase drivers Ryan Newman, Carl Edwards and Jeff Gordon will start ninth, 11th and 13th. Kevin Harvick, who many consider a favorite to win the Sprint Cup Championship, will start 33rd.
