PE – The Maritime Street Stock Showdown is set to take center stage at Oyster Bed Speedway on June 24 and expected to feature the largest field of street stocks in the Maritimes in several years. The purse exceeds $14,000 with $6,100 in contingency awards plus another $7,800 is cash payouts; the winner is guaranteed a minimum $1,500 and that is garnering interest from all three Maritime provinces. The race is the brainchild of motorsports promoter, Tom Nicholls. It is open to all street stock cars as well as competitors in the truck division at Scotia Speedworld. The feature race will be 100 laps and it will be a non-points race for entries who claim Oyster Bed Speedway as their home track. All teams must register in advance in order to compete in the event. Registration is open from Feb 12 to June 1; 35 teams have registered to-date, a good start toward the 50 Nicholls is hopeful for. Time trials, heat races, a last chance race, and fan picks will set the 30-car starting field for the feature. The $25 registration fee includes free admission to the pits for one person ($25 value), a free event t-shirt ($20 value), free bridge (link) passes for the first 20 off-Island cars to register ($63 value), free ferry passes for the first five Sydney-area cars ($97 value), and $25 fuel for the first 40 cars registered. “Oyster Bed Speedway ownership is supportive of what it is that we collectively want to accomplish with this inaugural event,” said Nicholls. “They have held the admission price for the event at their normal rate of $15 per adult and have dropped the youth rate for this event, so sll youths and kids under 15 years of age will get into the event free.” In addition, Speedway ownership will also donate their portion of the 50/50 draw to a charity of choice in which Nicholls has selected the QEH Children’s’ Ward.
