Sydney Speedway embarks on a five race schedule on Saturday afternoon with its 2022 Season Opener. The quarter-mile bullring on Grand Lake Road will see action in four stock car racing divisions, headlined by a 100-lap Late Model Sportsman feature. Racing action on Grand Lake Road begins on Saturday at 2 pm.

The Late Model Sportsman 100 is the first of three extended distance races for the class at Sydney Speedway. As previously announced, the trio of races comprises a Triple Crown that will pay an extra $1,000 to the champion of the three race Series and an extra $1,000 to a driver if he or she can sweep the victories in all three events. Several powerhouse local names have signed up to contend for the bonuses, including Sydney’s Chris Reid, Ronnie MacKay, Jerome Kehoe, Shawn Waterfield and Ken Magliaro. Rookie Connor Gibbons has also registered early to compete in the Late Model Sportsman Triple Crown. With this being the final race prior to the Robby’s Towing 100 for the AutoWorld Maritime All Star Sportsman Series on August 6, teams will be looking to dial in their cars before the mid-summer showdown.

The Mini Stock division will run 75-laps in their first feature of the 2022 season, Kody Quinn (Glace Bay, NS) is the top driver in the class, winning 16 straight feature races at the facility dating back to 2019. Several top drivers have registered for the season in an attempt to knock Quinn off the top step of the podium, including former Scotia Speedworld champion Steven Matthews (Bedford, NS), 2019 Passione Flooring East Coast Mini Stock Tour Rookie of the Year Darrell Hulme (Sydney, NS), former Dash for Cash winner Brian Axworthy (Sydney, NS), Ryan Price (Louisbourg, NS), Josh Rozicki (Sydney, NS) and more! While they have a lot of respect for each other, expect this one to be a close battle all the way down to the finish.

The V6 Thunder division returned to the track during the soft launch event last October. The class continues to grow with builds being prepared to debut throughout the 2022 season. A six-pack of drivers debuted in October with Dominion’s JT Turnbull taking home the win over Sam Burke (Glace Bay, NS). The duo, along with a handful of others, are expected to be trophy hunting on Saturday during their 30-lap feature.

The Bandolero class will also compete in an exhibition. The track is hoping to grow the division of cars build for drivers aged eight to 16 year old. Local drivers Brett Biron and Ethan Cooke took part in the Soft Launch event for the class last October.

Adult grandstand admission price for the Late Model Sportsman Triple Crown Race One on Saturday, May 28th is $20 (aged 19 and up), Youth 11 to 18 years of age are $10 each with children aged ten and under admitted to the grandstands free of charge. Pit admission is $30 and is restricted to those 18 years of age and older, or aged 14 to 17 with minor waiver form signed. Pit gates open at 9am, grandstand gates open at 1pm with racing beginning at 2pm. Please note, if inclement weather interferes with the Sydney Speedway Season Opener, a rain date has been set aside for Sunday, May 29th at 2pm.
