Sydney Speedway is re-opening this weekend for their “Soft Launch” event. Under the ownership of Lynden MacDougall and Kyle Mackinnon, the track will see a six-division card on Saturday and feature drivers from all three Maritime Provinces. Headlining the card is a 100-lap Late Model Sportsman race presented by Saf-way Auto Parts and Robby’s Towing and a visit from the Heart of a Champion Hot Rod Classics powered by Conrad Bros. with the Anchor Toyota Monster Mash presented by Jeff Landry Auto Body. Racing begins at 12 pm.

Thirteen Late Model Sportsman cars are pre-registered for the Saf-way Auto Parts and Robby’s Towing 100. With six cars registered from Cape Breton Island and seven having to haul across the Canso Causeway to get to Sydney Speedway, the race is shaping up to be an unofficial Battle of the Causeway. Leading the way in defending their home turf are former NAPA Sportsman Series Champions and Sydney Speedway feature winners Chris Reid and Shawn Waterfield, both of Sydney. Both drivers have been busy this season but, like dozens of others, are chomping at the bit to get on the bullring on Grand Lake Road. Chris’s brother Jeff Reid (Sydney, NS) will make his Late Model debut in the No. 31 Robby’s Towing entry while Ronnie MacKay (Mira Road, NS) will look to build on a solid 2020 with a strong run in the 100-lap feature on Saturday.

A pair of local heroes are returning to the track for the first time in several seasons. Jerome Kehoe (Sydney, NS) and Ross Lewis (Prime Brook, NS) are both registered to compete in Saturday’s Saf-way Auto Parts and Robby’s Towing 100. Kehoe, a former East Coast International Pro Stock Tour regular, has been out of the seat for several seasons. Lewis returns to his home track for the first time since 2016 in the No. 88 S&T Rentals/Island Lock and Safe Chevrolet.

Laurie Cormier (Riverview, NB) has won the last two extended distance Sportsman races in October in Sydney and will look to pitch the hattrick on Saturday. Cormier will not be alone making the haul from New Brunswick. Brady Creamer (Miramichi, NB) has seen his share of success at Maritime race tracks, including strong runs at Sydney in his career. Ryan Raynes (Saint John, NB) will be bringing his Fog City Auto Spa entry to Cape Breton Island for the first time in his racing career. Pro Stock regular Dustin Tucker (Darlings Island, NB) will be making his second career Sportsman starts driving the No. 52 Enkel Trucking entry usually driven by his wife Destiny Tucker.

Multi-time Valley Raceway dirt track winner Kyle Bent (Berwick, NS) will make his Late Model Sportsman debut driving for multi-time champion James Graves. Andrew Lively (Middle Sackville, NS) will complete his freshman season with a trip to Sydney Speedway, a track where he competed in his Legend car in 2020. Jeffrey Breen (Antigonish, NS) is a late entry but is no stranger to Sydney, having competed several times at the track in his Late Model.

The Deadly Welder Mini Stock 75 is drawing interest from all three Maritime Provinces with a total of 19 cars registered as of press time. Kody Quinn (Sydney, NS) will put his streak on the line as he has won the last 14 races Mini Stock races he has competed in at Sydney. He will be in tough against Darrell Hulme (New Waterford, NS), Josh Rozicki (Sydney, NS), Ryan Price (Louisbourg, NS), Brian Axworthy (North Sydney, NS), Jordan Mombourquette (Sydney, NS), and many more. Brennan MacInnis and Glen Cooke, both of Glace Bay, have been strong in any division they compete in and will now try their hands at Mini Stock racing action on Saturday afternoon. A strong off-Island contingent will be making the trip in hopes of taking the hardware back to the mainland. Steven Matthews (Bedford, NS), his cousin Colin Matthews (Dartmouth, NS), and Jason Pickles (Meaghers Grant, NS) are all Scotia Speedworld feature winners in 2021 while Mitchell Montgomery (Summerside, PE) picked up a Passione Flooring East Coast Mini Stock Tour win at Oyster Bed Speedway in August. Ryan McKnight (Sussex, NB) has split his time in 2021 competing with the Mini Stock Tour along with races at three New Brunswick ovals. Colin Brewer (Tyne Valley, PE) and Donnie Pratt (Moncton, NB), both of whom competed in one-off events at the track in 2020, will return to chase the checkered flag on Saturday afternoon.

Entries continue to roll in for the Legend, Bandolero, and V6 Thunder divisions with over a half dozen cars already signaling intent to compete. Cory Hall (Jolicure, NB) has registered in the Legend division for the Louie’s Cozy Corner 50. Hall, along with Scotia Speedworld track champion Danny Chisholm (Canning, NS). Young Lion competitors Dylan Dowe (Bedford, NS) and Owen Mahar (Hubley, NS) are also on the entry list for Saturday along with Masters competitors Daryl Mahar (Hubley, NS) and Brad Wadden (Hammonds Plains, NS). Brandon MacMillan (Glace Bay, NS) made the move from the Mini Stock division over the winter and will make his Legend debut on Saturday.

The Bandolero division will see a mix of new talent and seasoned veterans. While Brett Biron (Sydney, NS) and Ethan Cooke (Glace Bay, NS) will make their debut on Saturday, Chase MacKay (Bear Cove, NS), Campbell Delaney (Halifax, NS), and Caden Tufts (Timberlea, NS) will look to add to their already growing resumes. Brayden Wadden (Hammonds Plains, NS) and Landon Pierce (Bridgewater, NS) competed for the Beginner Bandolero Championship at Scotia Speedworld in 2021 and will end their freshman years racing in Sydney on Saturday.

Entries for the V6 Thunder division presented by Russell W. Hawkins Limited continue to roll in. Late Model Sportsman driver Joey Rudderham (Mira, NS) and veteran Mini Stock drivers Zachary Langille (Sydney, NS) and JT Turnbull (Dominion, NS) will set their sights on the first race in the rebirth of the Thunder division. Sam Burke (Glace Bay, NS) and Adam Mugridge (Sydney, NS) also have their paperwork filed ahead of Saturday’s 30-lap feature.

Please note, all COVID-19 public health guidelines for gatherings set forth by the Government of Nova Scotia will be followed; all participants and fans will need to prove they are double vaccinated before entering the facility.

An open practice will be held on Friday from Noon to dusk. Admission to the pits on Friday is $10 per person.

Adult grandstand admission prices for the Sydney Speedway Soft Launch are $20 (aged 19 and up), youth 11 to 18 years of age are $10 each with children aged 10 and under admitted to the grandstands free of charge. Pit admission is $30 and is restricted to those 18 years of age and older, or aged 14 to 17 with a minor waiver form signed. Pit gates open for competitors on Saturday at 7 am, grandstand gates open for fans at 10 am with racing at 12 pm. Tickets are available at the gate on race day, cash only. Camping is available on site (no services or hookups) free of charge.
