John Andretti, a winner in CART, IMSA GTP, Rolex Sports Car Series, and NASCAR during his driving career, passed away Thursday after a lengthy battle with cancer. Andretti revealed his diagnosis of colon cancer in April 2017, deciding to use his platform to raise awareness for regular check-ups with the hashtag #CheckIt4Andretti.

Andretti’s death was confirmed in a post by Andretti Autosport:

Andretti, 56, was a member of the famed Andretti racing family. He was the son of Aldo Andretti, older brother of racer Adam Andretti, nephew of Mario Andretti, and first cousin to IndyCar champion Michael and Jeff Andretti.

“John Andretti embodied the spirit of a champion and inspired an entire fan base through his courageous battle with cancer,” NASCAR President Steve Phelps said in a statement. “He was a fierce competitor throughout his life, and we are saddened by his passing. The entire NASCAR family extends its deepest condolences and prayers to John’s family.”

Andretti started his driving career in 1987 with the PPG IndyCar Series, moving to NASCAR in 1993 where, through 2011, he made starts in 393 Cup races, 37 in the Xfinity Series, and six in the Gander Ourdoor RV Truck Series. From 2007 to 2011 he also made 10 IndyCar starts.
