Speedway 660 Set to Close 2014 With Annual Speed Weekend

GEARY, NB – Speedway 660 is all set to host one of Canada’s most prestigious short-track racing events. SpeedWeekend 2014 gets underway on Friday evening with a free event for fans, campers, race teams and sponsors. The racing schedule includes the Irving Oil Blending & Packaging 150 (Sportsman) on Saturday; the Re/Max 250 (Late Model/Pro Stock) on Sunday and; the ENDURO 200 Championship on Monday.

“Our staff and volunteers have been working non-stop this week to make sure we are ready to accommodate fans, race teams and our marketing partners for an incredible weekend of racing” said Speedway 660’s Max Roy. “You can feel the excitement building with campers arriving every day and we’ll soon see race teams start rolling into the Geary Woods for SpeedWeekend.”

The Harvey’s Family Farms corn-boil, bonfire and infield concert kicks off the weekend at 7PM on Friday. This popular free event for fans, campers, race teams and sponsors continues to attract large crowds every year. Royal Records recording star Tristan Horncastle, who wowed race fans last year, is back to play another infield concert on Friday night. After his show at Speedway 660, Tristan is off to Edmonton where he’ll play in a Spotlight Performance at the 2014 Canadian Country Music Awards.

The Irving Blending & Packaging 150 highlights racing action on Saturday at 7PM. The West Wood Estate Apartments Bandoleros and the Atlantic Modified Tour will also race on Saturday night. Colby Smith, victorious in the 2013 SpeedWeekend Sportsman race, will be back to try to win it again. Andrew Rodgers, winner of the Martin’s Home Heating 100, and Brent Roy, Speedway 660’s 2014 champion, will also be strong contenders.

Qualifying for the Re/Max 250 gets underway at 2PM on Sunday. Fans will also see the Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooters and the DMR Auto Sales & Service Street Stocks on Sunday afternoon. Then, once the qualifying is complete, the Re/Max 250 takes the green flag at 7PM Sunday night. And on Monday at 2PM the ENDURO Championship 200 wraps up an action packed SpeedWeekend.

“The car count for the Re/Max 250 will be the best it’s been in years and not only are the numbers up, the level of competition has reached an all-time high” said Roy. “The Irving Oil Blending and Packaging 150 will be intense too and race fans are going to enjoy our support classes on both days and no SpeedWeekend would be complete without the ENDURO 200 on Monday”

Shawn Tucker, who won the Re/Max 250 in 2013 for a record setting third time, is always a contender. Lonnie Sommerville and Johnny Clark, both two time winners, will also be back for another shot at the win. A virtual who’s who from Speedway 660’s weekly Pro Stock Division, the Pro All Star Series and the Maritime Pro Stock Tour will attempt to qualify for the big race.

“We’re excited about the Re/Max 250, because a victory on our home track would be the icing on the cake for what has been an incredible season, but it’s always the toughest race of the year to win” said Dave O’Blenis, the five-time Speedway 660 Pro Stock champion. “It’ll be an intense weekend for the O’Blenis family because on Saturday Alexandra and I will both be running the 150 and Courtney will be in her Bando, then I will focus on running the 250 on Sunday.”

Travis Benjamin, the 2014 Oxford 250 winner, hopes to finally take the checkered flag in the Re/Max 250 this weekend. Benjamin has been on the podium but has never won the big race at Speedway 660. Austin Theriault, who is running three NASCAR Nationwide races for JR Motorsport this season, is excited about coming north after his 2nd place finish in the Oxford 250.

“SpeedWeekend has really grown to become one of the best weekends of short-track racing anywhere in North America and we’re proud to welcome fans, race teams and marketing partners to Speedway 660”  said Roy. “We are also excited to be able showcase all five of our weekly racing divisions and I know the fans are going to be on the edge of their seats all weekend long.”

Notes: Admission to all Speedway 660 events, including SpeedWeekend is FREE for children seven years of age and younger. Adult tickets are for fans 16 years of age and older. Youth tickets are for fans between 8 and 15 years of age. Reserved seating is only available for Sunday. Pit Passes are only available for fans 18 years of age and older.
