Sixth Annual Caleb Dunn Memorial Postponed to Sunday

Sixth Annual Caleb Dunn Memorial Set for Saturday at Petty

RIVER GLADE, NB (posted Aug. 2/18) – Petty International Raceway returns to action this Saturday to honor short track racing legend Caleb Dunn in the Sixth Annual Caleb Dunn Memorial. The packed six division card of racing action is highlighted by a 100-lap Sportsman feature. Racing begins on Saturday, August 4th at 6 pm.

Officials are expecting upwards of two dozen Late Model Sportsman to compete in the 100-lap feature on Saturday evening. A.E. McKay Builders Late Model Sportsman feature winners in 2018 including Brady Creamer (Miramichi), Jordan Veinotte (Porter’s Lake, NS) and Laurie Cormier (Riverview) headline a list of talent that will be looking to defend the high banked bullring from the visiting drivers in search of the checkered flag. Former track champions Kenny MacKenzie Jr. (Salisbury), Russell Smith Jr (Lakeside, NS) and Luc Bourgeois (Memramcook), Jacob Logan (Harvey), Matt Rodgers (Smithtown), Ryan VanOirschot (Antigonish, NS) are among those that are eyeing Saturday’s 100-lap feature.

A number of local businesses have stepped up to provide contingency prizes for the Caleb Dunn Memorial Late Model Sportsman 100. Petty International Raceway will be giving one Sportsman team two new tires, Bumper to Bumper has provided a prize pack, Xander Sign Group has a $500 race car decal kit up for grabs and Finish Line Vinyl Design has provided a $500 labour credit. More contingency prizes are expected to be added prior to race day.

Petty International Raceway will give every team $100 in tow money for teams traveling farther than 100 kilometers to get to the track. NAPA Auto Parts has supplied a $1,700 tool box which will be raffled off. Tickets will be available at the track on race day at $20 each (minimum of 200 tickets) with all proceeds raised going back into the pockets of the teams that compete in Saturday’s Caleb Dunn Memorial Late Model Sportsman 100.

Not to be outdone, the Westwood Estates Street Stocks will contest their second Triple Crown event of the 2018 season with a 75-lap feature Saturday. Nick Cudmore (Petitcodiac) won the opening round of the Westwood Estates Tripe Crown on June 9th but it is Mike Duskey (Albany, PE) showing the way in the Triple Crown points after one event with Luc McLaughlin (Geary) and Logan Power (Riverview) playing chase.

In the Westwood Estates Street Stock season long championship battle, it is Michael Cormier (Grand-Barachois) showing the way after his big win two weeks ago. Cudmore, Power, leading rookie Brandon Carter (Moncton) and the No. 55 car, scheduled to be driven by Alexandra O’Blenis (Boundary Creek) on Saturday, complete the championship top five after five events.

After a pair of point paying Mister Transmission Mini Stock features on July 20th and a pair of third place finishes, Chantel Ackles (Shubenacadie, NS) finds herself as the point leader for the first time in her career. Ackles paces Rob Poirier (Irishtown) by four points and Patricia Taylor (Salisbury) by five points after five race meets. Chris Garnett (Havelock) and Mike Weagle (Salisbury) find themselves within the top five with only three events to go for the class. There will be no time to sit and ride Saturday night though with a 50-lap feature ahead of one of the most competitive crop of Four Cylinders the track has seen in years.

Sam Rogers (Lower Onslow, NS) is in firm control of the Leisure Days RV Bandolero division standings with three races to go but as is the case within the sport, no lead is safe. Colton Noble (Upper Nine Mile River, NS) sits second in the championship chase while Danny Chisholm (Canning, NS) and Owen Mahar (Hubley, NS) have only one point between them for the third place spot in the standings. Evan Lane (Salisbury) is the top New Brunswick youngster in the Bandolero division at Petty International Raceway as he runs fifth after five races.

Paula Evans extended her lead in the Kings County Performance Beginner Four Cylinder class as they pass the halfway point in the 2018 season. The lead is slim, with only nine points between her and Ashley Campbell after three races. Ellen Smith, Kaila Smith and Amanda Llewellyn complete the top five in the standings as they head into the penultimate round on Saturday.

Braxton Stafford leads the Atlantic Modified Tour track points heading into their third of five events at Petty International Raceway. John Lyons, who won the Season Opener in May, is second in the five race mini series with Joe Hoyt, Greg Butler and Kevin Bailey in the top five as they chase the hardware over 50-laps on Saturday.

Fans are reminded that Kids Rides will begin the evening’s festivities at 6pm. Kids of all ages will be able to come down on the track and take a ride around the high banks with their favorite driver at a safe speed. This is in addition to the Junior Fan Award, which kids can fill out a ballot to be selected to be in the spotlight during the intermission of the show.

Grandstand admission prices for Saturday’s Caleb Dunn Memorial Mid-Season Championships are $20 for adults and $10 for youth aged eight to 18, while children seven years of age and under will be admitted free. Pit admission is $25 and is restricted to those 16 years of age and older. Pit gates for competitors open at 2pm, grandstand gates open for spectators at 4pm with racing getting underway following Kids Rides at 6pm.
