Scotia Speedworld’s CARSTAR Weekly Racing Series will close its 29th season this Friday at 7:00pm. Seven divisions will crown champions: the Coors Light Trucks, Toursec Thunder &Lightning, Hydraulics Plus Bandit & Outlaw Bandoleros, Strictly Hydraulics Legends and the Affordable Fuels Sportsman. Grandstands will open at 5:00pm.

The closest championship battle in the CARSTAR Weekly Racing Series is a three-way dance in the Toursec Thunder division. Stevie Lively (Shubenacadie) enters with a slim three point advantage on Dave Matthews (Kennetcook). Lively’s lead on Matthews had been cut in the last two races from 18 points to three and will look to hang on for his first championship since his Toursec Thunder title in 2010. Matthews is a two-time champion, winning in 2011 and 2014. Andrew Lively (Middle Sackville), in search of his first Toursec Thunder title, sits third and has pulled to within 12 points of the point lead by virtue of his second feature win of the season last Friday night.

Pete Miller (Kennetcook) retook the lead in the Affordable Fuels and Metro Home Heating Sportsman division last Friday night on the strength of a second place feature finish. Jordan Veinotte (Porter’s Lake) entered with the point lead but will now head into battle this Friday with an eight point disadvantage to Miller. While Travis Roma (West Chezzetcook) and 2012 champion Aaron Boutilier (Porter’s Lake) find themselves with a small outside shot at the title, their focus will be on each other as only four points separate themselves heading into Friday night.

The Hydraulics Plus Bandolero Bandits division features the closest point battle of any of the Bandolero divisions at Scotia Speedworld. Nathan Langille (Coldbrook) leads by 11 points on Colton Noble (Upper Nine Mile River). Both drivers have five feature wins on the 12 race season and have been the class of their field over the season.

Sam Rogers and Tyler Hutchinson, both of Onslow, lead the Outlaw and Beginner Bandit divisions, respectively, as a part of the Hydraulics Plus Bandolero division. Given their point lead and the average car count in their classes, it is expected that both Rogers and Hutchison will only have to start their features to win their first Scotia Speedworld track championships in their second full year of racing.

Reigning Toursec Lightning champion Deven Smith (Lakeside) will look for a second straight championship as he heads in with a 15 point advantage on Friday night. Scott Thibodeau (Williamswood), last week’s main feature winner, enters second in the standings while four-time feature winner in 2016 in “Rational” Richard Drake (Halifax) has a mathematical shot at his first track championship but has a 26 point hole to dig himself out of.

Paul Goulden (Shelburne) still has a mathematical chance at catching Jarrett Butcher (Porter’s Lake) in the Strictly Hydraulics Legends division. Goulden, who has won the last two features at the track, still has 27 points to make up on Butcher. The reigning Strictly Hydraulics Legends Champion and two time Bandolero titlist can wrap up the championship with a ninth place finish or better in the main feature.

With a 37 point advantage, Dan Smith (Lower Sackville) has to only start the main feature in the Coors Light Truck class to claim an unprecedented fifth straight Scotia Speedworld track championship. Jason Fenton is Smith’s nearest point competition and enters the final race 37 points back from the #39 Glenstone.ca Chevrolet team.

Craig MacDonald (Waverley, Strictly Hydraulics Legends) and Mike Jollimore (Halifax, Toursec Lightning) have both clinched the Tim Hortons at the Airport Rookie of the Year Awards in their respective classes. Brooke Dowe (Bedford) has a comfortable advantage on Dylan MacMillan (Glenholme) and Chase MacKay (Bear Cove) in the Hydraulics Plus Bandolero Tim Hortons at the Airport Rookie of the Year battle.

The closest Tim Hortons at the Airport Rookie of the Year battle all season has been in the Toursec Thunder division between Mitchell Hopkins (Beaver Bank) and the team of Greg McKay and Justin Rowe (Dartmouth). Hopkins holds one of the biggest leads that have been between the two over the 2016 season – 13 points. Hopkins is a former Toursec Lightning driver while McKay and Rowe entered their first full stock car season in the #42 car in 2016.
