Veteran Maritime motorsports photographer Ken MacIsaac was at Cape Breton Miner’s Memorial Speedway (CBMMS) August 1. Ken’s recap of the event follows…

Shawn Waterfield from Sydney led wire to wire in capturing the Gillis Home Hardware 100  Napa Sportsman Series race at CBMMS on August 1. Waterfield started on the pole, and quickly led outside pole sitter Darren Price at the drop of the green.  The field ran caution free until lap 21, when Kyle Reid who was running third at the time, spun out of turn 4, collecting Ken Magliaro.  Both cars were able to continue.   Waterfield led Price on the restart until the next caution on lap 27, when Magliaro tangled with Joey Rudderham in turn 4, resulting in both cars spinning to the infield.   Once again, Waterfield sped ahead of Price on the restart, with John Biron running third.  Kyle Reid, who was battling handling problems all day, spun on lap 37, and again on lap 59, bringing out the caution each time.  On the restart, the top 3 remained the same – Waterfield, Price & Biron.  While waterfield checked out in front, John Biron mounted a challenge to Price for second, but couldn’t make the pass.  Lap 97 brought out the final caution with Reid, Rudderham, and Daniel Delorey spinning in turn 2.   The final restart saw Lynden MacDougall, who was running 4th at the time, take 3rd spot from Biron, and was challenging Price for the second spot.  The two made contact in turn 2, giving MacDougall second.  Price fought back a lap later. While battling for the runner-up spot, the two made contact again, resulting in MacDougall spinning in turn 4.  Waterfield cruised to the checkered, while Biron snuck by for second, and Price came back for third.

Mike MacLeod from Sydney led the early laps of the Saf-Way Auto Parts Street Stock 35 lap feature, before being overtaken by eventual winner Vance MacDonald.   MacLeod hung on for 2nd, while Shawn Cole finished 3rd.

Arguably the highlight of the card was the 50 lap Ramsay’s Honda Sales mini stock race.  Heat winners AJ Ford and Art McNamara led the 19 car field to green.   Ford led to almost half way before JR Lawson took command.  Kyle MacMillan, McNamara and Kody Quinn rounded out the top 5 midway. Three quarts through the feature, Lawson continued to lead Kyle MacMillan, McNamara, Ford and Drew MacEachern who moved up to 5th.   A few laps later, MacEachern developed  heating problems while in  5th, allowing local favorites Kody Quinn and Brandon MacMillan to move up into the top 6.   Lawson held off a strong challenge from Kyle MacMillan, while Brandon MacMillan raced up to third.  AJ Ford hung on for 4th, while Kody Quinn came home in fifth.  Speaking of Quinn, a scary incident occurred after the checkered flag flew. Quinn’s #88 crossed the line, then proceeded to coast directly into the turn 1 tire barrier.  Safety crews rushed to the car, to find an unresponsive Quinn behind the wheel.

“I didn’t feel right all day, and I don’t even remember the last few laps”, Quinn said.

After being diagnosed with heat exhaustion, Quinn was treated at the track, and later released.
