09.23.12: Denny Hamlin's No. 11 Toyota was the fastest car in Friday's opening Cup practice. Then, because his team mistakenly ran racing tire pressures instead of qualifying tire pressures for Friday's time trials, Hamlin qualified 32nd. In Saturday's two practice sessions, however, Hamlin was back on top of the speed charts at 131.656 mph and 132.053 mph, respectively, suggesting that a run through the field is likely on Sunday. . . . Dale Earnhardt Jr. was pleased with changes made to his car during Saturday's final practice. With 22 minutes left in the session, Earnhardt, who qualified 14th for Sunday's race, radioed to crew chief Steve Letarte, "Pretty easy to drive, considering what I've been driving all weekend -- just a little snug." Issues the team found within the engine will force Earnhardt to give up the fourth starting spot, but crew chief Steve Letarte believes Earnhardt, one of 12 drivers eligible for the Cup championship, can use pit strategy to move to the front. "I don't think we are super concerned," Letarte said. "We had a great car in practice and qualified really well, so we showed we have good speed. Fortunately, this is a race track that there are multiple pit strategies, and it's not a really simple, straightforward pit strategy to call."

08.23.12: Unapproved modifications to the frame rails of a NASCAR Sprint Cup car can be very expensive, as crew chief Slugger Labbe and his No. 27 Richard Childress Racing team found out Wednesday afternoon. The sanctioning body fined Labbe $100,000 and suspended him from NASCAR competition until Oct. 3 for violations discovered in post-race inspection at the research-and-development center in Concord, N.C. The No. 27 Chevrolet, driven by Paul Menard, was the random car chosen for inspection after Sunday's Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway. Car chief Craig Smokstad and crew member Grant Hutchens also drew suspensions until Oct. 3, after NASCAR discovered that the frame rails had been modified after having been previously approved. The rule book citation also includes "intentionally modifying frame rails for the purpose of deceiving NASCAR's inspection gauges." Labbe, Smokstad and Hutchens, who would sit out six races under the suspensions, were placed on probation though Dec. 31. In addition, Menard and team owner Richard Childress were docked 25 championship driver points and 25 owner points, respectively. Childress indicated to FoxSports.com that he plans to appeal. If he does so, Labbe, Smokstad and Hutchens would have their suspensions deferred until the appeals process runs its course. Menard finished ninth in Sunday's race, fourth best among Chevy drivers. The 25-point penalty drops him from 15th to 16th in the Cup standings.

The ban came four days after Fike and his girlfriend were arrested in an Ohio amusement park's parking lot on charges of possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia; Fike pleaded guilty to lesser charges and was sentenced to two years' probation. In a story on NASCAR.com, Fike said he completed an inpatient recovery program and was nearly one year sober when he initially asked NASCAR about the reinstatement process last summer. Fike, who credited a renewed faith and closeness to his family, called the reinstatement "a huge blessing." Fike competed in 52 NASCAR Nationwide Series races from 2004-06 with a best finish of eighth in his second season. He moved to Red Horse Racing in the truck series in 2007, posting his best finish of fifth place just seven days before his arrest. 08.14.12: Speculation is strong there could be more NASCAR "premiere" division races in Canada than the one and only Nationwide Series event set for this weekend in Montreal. While the Montreal organizers are interested in a Sprint Cup Series date, so too is Mosport in Ontario - now co-owned by driver Ron Fellows. Fellows has indicated Mosport would ultimatley like a Sprint Cup date but is also interested in the Nationwide and/or Camping World Truck Series. With the aero targets met, manufacturers can now begin to make parts and pieces for the new cars. Allmendinger has agreed to enter the sanctioning body's Road to Recovery program as a path to reinstatement. "From the standpoint of what happened or didn't happen, let's just put that aside," Penske said. "I would tell him as we're standing here, he's got to face the facts, these are the facts, let's move on now and go into whatever rehabilitation program's available to him, which I think will be very positive for him. "Also, unfortunately, he becomes the example, but I'll tell you, it sends really broad message across this garage area. One of the great things about NASCAR is that there are very few irregularities of this type that we've seen over the last couple of years. When you look at other sports -- stick-and-ball sports -- there's other things, and I think that's a credit to the way NASCAR runs it. "To me, unfortunately, he becomes an example, and we've got to move on, and I think he understands that, and I'm going to do everything I can to be one thought in his mind that, 'Hey, let's move on here.' " Penske can either replace Allmendinger in the No. 22 or wait for him to return. Sam Hornish Jr., who will drive the car next Sunday at Pocono, finished 16th at the Brickyard.
