Chris Reid Wins Robby’s Towing 100 at Bud’s Speedway

Chris Reid took home a $5,000 payday at his home track of Bud’s Speedway Saturday during the inaugural Robby’s Towing Sportsman Classic. Reid, who flies back and forth from Fort McMurray, Alberta to Sydney, Nova Scotia to race, took the lead on Lap 61 of the 150-lap feature from Ronnie MacKay (Sydney, NS) and never looked back en route to the big win. It was Reid’s second straight Robby’s Towing Late Model Sportsman win at his home track after winning the Season Opener in May.

Brady Creamer (Miramichi, NB), who had a tire go flat while running second on Lap 21, rebounded to race back to second with MacKay scoring a solid third-place finish after leading the opening 61 laps from the outside pole position. Jerome Kehoe (Sydney, NS) was fourth in his first Robby’s Towing Late Model Sportsman start of the season while Scotia Speedworld regular Alex Johnson (Enfield, NS) was fifth when the checkered flag flew.

Sixteen Late Model Sportsman drivers made the haul to Lake Doucette Motor Speedway. Former Lake Doucette Motor Speedway champion JP Arsenault (Clare, NS), Creamer, and MacKay picked up qualifying heat race wins. Long haul gas card draws from Conway Customz, WingNut Productions, and Tim’s Corner Motorsports was picked up by Creamer, Johnson, Darren Hilchie (Lake Charlotte, NS), and Brandon Albert (Summerside, PE). The Robby’s Towing 150 featured five caution flags, included a 71-lap green flag run to the finish and took one hour 14 minutes to complete.

In support class action, Landon Pierce (Bridgewater, NS) captured his third straight Bud’s Speedway win in the GWL Trucking and Landscaping Bandolero division but was shadowed all the way by Brett Biron (Sydney, NS). Biron looked poised to make a late move for the win in the 15-lap feature, but could not pull off the move. Sidney Reid (Fort McMurray, AB) was third.

John Biron (Sydney, NS) captured a popular Street Stock feature win on Saturday, but it was not easy as he was challenged hard by the two drivers hot in his tire tracks. Dennis Nickerson (Marshy Hope, NS) was determined to get by the No. 57 but, in turn, was challenged by Colton Beaver (Louisbourg, NS). The trio chased each other around the Bullring with Biron ultimately holding off Nickerson and Beaver for the feature triumph. Jerome Kehoe, in his return to Street Stock racing, was fourth with JJ Cusack (Sydney, NS) in fifth. 

After coming close to his first win of the season in June, Chris Drover (Lower Sackville, NS) captured an exciting NAPA Auto Parts Mini Stock feature. The race saw point leader Kody Quinn (Blackett’s Lake, NS) and Josh Benac (Sydney River, NS) make contact on Lap 19 of the 35-lap contest, sending both to the back of the ensuing restart and effectively ending both of their bids for the win. Dyllan Farrell (Sydney, NS) was second in the feature with Ryan Price (Louisbourg, NS) racing home to third. After blowing a motor in Friday practice, Josh Rozicki (Point Edward, NS) came back strong to finish fourth with rookie Lauchie Stubbart (Sydney, NS) coming home fifth after starting on the pole via his heat race victory.

Brandon MacMillan (Glace Bay, NS) scored his first career feature victory in the Mallard Electric Hobby Stock feature. MacMillan took the lead from Cory Aker (Sydney Mines, NS) on Lap 11 of the 20-lap feature and would lead the rest of the way to the checkered flag. It wasn’t without challenges from Aker though and also included a green-white-checkered finish to the race. Aker was second, holding off a hard-charging Glen Cooke (Glace Bay, NS) for the spot. Mike McLeod (Sydney, NS) drove the car of the late Ferg MacKinnon to a fourth-place finish while traveling driver Bradley Darrach (O’Leary, PE) completed the top five.

The Saf-way Auto Parts V6 Thunder feature was halted on Lap Nine of 20 due to rain. It was the last feature on the card and the remaining 11-laps will be held over and the race will resume at the beginning of the August 26th racing card. Glen Cooke was leading at the Lap Nine red flag over rookie Austin Petitpas (Westville, NS) and point leader Brennan MacInnis (Glace Bay, NS).

The next event at Bud’s Speedway is the Mini Stock Showcase. The NAPA Auto Parts Mini Stocks will go 100-laps in their marquee feature of the season. The Street Stocks, Saf-way Auto Parts V6 Thunder, Mallard Electric Hobby Stocks, GWL Trucking and Landscaping Bandoleros will compete in their fourth championship point race of the season. The night will be anchored by a Demolition Derby.
