On Saturday the car numbers for the late Scott Kelly (12) and Scott Fraser (00) were officially retired from Maritime Pro Stock Tour competition. The two regional racing stars both died in the prime of their racing careers; Kelly was just 28 when he lost a two-year-battle with cancer in 1999 and Fraser lost his life in a snowmobile accident in 2004 at the age of 33. Fraser’s father Frank and brother Frank Jr. accepted the retirement pennant from Dan MacLeod representing Atlantic Cat and Kelly’s mother and father Brenda and Junior Kelly accepted the No. 12 retirement pennant from Rudi Foster representing Parts for Trucks. As part of the event three tribute cars were in the field for the race; one replicating Fraser’s familiar ’00’ and one bearing ’08’ and replicating the car he drove in is last year of competition, and one replicating Kelly’s familiar ’12’. Maine’s Ben Rowe drove the 00 to a second-place finish, Antigonish’s Donald Chisholm finished 12th in the 12, and Cassius Clark finished 16th in the 08. The retirement ceremony was part of the 15th annual Atlantic cat 250, an event sponsored by Fraser’s longtime supporter – Atlantic Cat, and sanctioned by Kelly’s longtime supporter – Parts for Trucks.
