Petty Ready for Short Track Showcase This Saturday

A cornucopia of stock car racing is set for all to enjoy this Saturday evening at Petty International Raceway. A total of seven divisions will contest eight feature events to kick off the month of August at the River Glade, New Brunswick oval. Racing action kicks off on Saturday, August 1 at 6 p.m.

For the first time since the Atlantic Bubble was formed on July 3, all of Petty International Raceway’s house divisions will be on the same racing card. The card will be anchored by the A.E. McKay Builders Late Model Sportsman, who will race a 60-lap feature to close out the show on Saturday. The last time the Sportsman was on track, it was during the first Brycon Construction Bubble Buster. During that extended lap event, Alexandra O’Blenis (Boundary Creek, NB) held off a hard-charging Kenny MacKenzie Jr (Salisbury, NB) for the victory. Koven Lewis (Salisbury, NB), who finished third in that Bubble Buster feature, impressed by winning his heat race and leading laps in the feature. With almost a month between Sportsman races at Petty Raceway, these teams will be chomping at the bit to get back to the track!

Two weeks ago, the Street Stock division saw the triumphant return of Michael Cormier (Grand-Barachois, NB) to victory lane. The reigning track champion had seen mechanical gremlins follow the team in the first month of competition throughout the Province but put those all behind in a domination performance in the Street Stock 100 presented by Westwood Estates on July 18th. Riley Goodwin (McAdam, NB), who was the winner of the Kick the COVID-19 Pandemic Race in June, was third in the Street Stock 100 and was the winner last weekend at Speedway 660. Brad MacLean (Miramichi, NB) has been consistent, finishing second in both features at Petty Raceway this season. Should someone want to punch their ticket to victory lane on Saturday in the Street Stock division, they will have to get by this trio to receive the checkered flag first.

Ryan McKnight (Sussex, NB) shocked the Mini Stock world when he took home the checkered flag two weeks ago during the Brycon Construction Bubble Buster Round Two. While the opening chapters of the season had began with Mike Edwards (Penobsquis, NB) and Rob Poirier (Irishtown, NB) and a budding rivalry, it was McKnight who stole the show with his first career Mini Stock victory in front of a Pro Stock crowd. Trevor Smith (Timberlea, NS) gave McKnight all he could handle in the waning laps but ran out of laps to make the winning move. With several out of town teams expected to make the trek to Petty International Raceway this weekend, the action is sure to be intense from flag to flag in the Mister Transmission Mini Stock division.

McKnight’s Mini Stock win was preceded by two more big first wins on July 18th. These came in the Leisure Days RV Bandolero classes where Teagan Dempsey (Fredericton, NB) and Chase Livingston (Springhill, NS) drove to victory lane. Dempsey’s win in the Outlaw division was one that saw him top a tough field that included Colton Noble (Upper Nine Mile River, NS) and Tanton Wooldridge (Summerside, NS). Livingston took his turn with the checkered flag during the Beginner feature, continuing a legacy within the Maritime stock car racing community for the family. With the youngsters of the Petty International Raceway racing family looking to gain some valuable seat time while chasing the checkered flag, these two features will keep fans on the edge of their seats on Saturday night.

The Kings County Performance Women on Wheels division will welcome back several Nova Scotian drivers that were not able to compete in June due to border restrictions. The first race for the beginner class during the Kick the COVID-19 Pandemic Race Day was won by sophomore driver Hannah Gallant, but she will have to be on her game to defend her home turf this Saturday!

The Legends division will make its return to Petty International Raceway on Saturday. Braden Langille (Shubenacadie, NS) has been the dominant force in the Maritimes over the past two seasons and has continued that in 2020. Langille is the 2020 INEX Winter Nationals Pro champion and won the Brycon Construction Bubble Buster for Legends on July 4th. Last weekend, he took to Sydney Speedway (NS) and won two of the three features in their season opener. The only winner not named Langille in feature competition for Legends in the Maritimes this season has been Kody Quinn (Sydney, NS), who took the opening leg of the Sydney Speedway opener last Saturday. The pair will have their work cut out for them should they make the trek to the high banked bullring this weekend.

The Atlantic Modified Tour will contest their first of six races in 2020 with the CannaConnect 35 on Saturday evening. A full preview of that event can be found at www.atlanticmodifieds.com.

Fans and teams are reminded to practice social distancing throughout Saturday’s event and a complete list of updated COVID-19 restrictions in regards to Petty Raceway can be viewed online at www.PettyRaceway.com. Please note, due to COVID-19 regulations in the Province of New Brunswick, Petty Raceway is required to collect contact information from every individual that attends this event.

Grandstand admission prices for Saturday’s event are $20 for adults and $10 for youth aged eight to 18, while children seven years of age and under will be admitted free. Pit admission is $25 and is restricted to those 16 years of age and older. Pit gates open at 1 p.m., grandstand gates open for spectators at 4 p.m. with racing getting underway at 6 p.m. Camping is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. There will be an open practice for competitors on Friday evening from 6 p.m. to dusk. The cost for Friday night practice is $10 per person.
