Smith, Jr. Wins Sportsman 100 at Petty Raceway June 6, 2016 Regional Russell Smith, Jr. (photo – Petty Int’l Raceway) Russell Smith Jr (Lakeside, NS) made his return to Sportsman racing a successful one by taking home the Trent Blakney Towing and Excavating 100 at Petty International Raceway on Sunday afternoon. Smith Jr., a former Sportsman champion at Petty International Raceway, took the lead on the tenth lap of the 100-lap feature and never looked back en route to his first win of the season. Luc Bourgeois (Memramcook, NB) kept in Smith’s tire tracks over the final 23 laps but had to settle for second when the checkered flag flew. Dawson McIntee (Moncton, NB) and Quality Concrete 100 winner Andrew Rodgers (Smithtown, NB) finished third and fourth, respectively, with Ken MacKenzie Jr (Salisbury, NB) coming home fifth as the first driver one lap down to the leader. Heat races for the Trent Blakney Towing and Excavating 100 were won by Alexandra O’Blenis (Boundary Creek, NB) and Mackenzie Jr. Thirteen cars started the feature race, which featured four yellows and took 42 minutes to complete. “The Thrill Maker” Craig Ward (Riverview) won the Extreme Windows and Entrance Systems Street Stock feature going away over the 30-lap duration. Nick Cudmore (Petitcodiac, NB) made a last lap pass on Mike Edwards (Penobsquis, NB) to take second place in the main event. The 30-lap feature ran without a caution. Edwards took the win in the Extreme Windows and Entrance Systems Street Stock heat race. Tim Webster (Beaver Bank, NS) drove away from the field in the Mister Transmission Mini Stock 25-lap main feature to take his second straight win of the season at Petty International Raceway. The Nova Scotia driver had plenty of racing room between JR Lawson (Shubenacadie, NS) and Mike Weagle (Salisbury, NB) as the two battled tooth and nail for the final ten laps of the feature. Weagle would get the best of the former track champions by finishing second over Lawson. Webster and Lawson took first place honors in the heat races for the Mister Transmission Mini Stock division. Sam Rogers (Lower Onslow, NS) captured his first career victory at Petty International Raceway with the win in the Leisure Days RV Bandolero main feature. Rogers was hounded at the end of the 20-lap affair by Opening Day winner Michael Cormier (Grand-Barachois, NB) but fended off the charge to collect the big win. Cormier was second, followed by Josh Langille (Coldbrook, NS). Rogers and Langille captured the checkered flag in the two 10-lap qualifying races for the Leisure Days RV Bandolero division. Mike “Sparky” Raeburn (Hampton, NB) took home the Atlantic Modified Tour feature over Joe Hoyt (Waasis, NB) and Mike Phillips (Goshen, NB). Phillips made a daring three wide move to pocket the checkered flag in the qualifier for the Atlantic Modified Tour. Ashley Campbell (Harrietsfield, NS) won the inaugural Women on Wheels event at Petty International Raceway. The 15-lap feature thrilled fans from green flag to checkered. Brenda Shortell (Lakeside, NS) brought her ride home in second with Sherry Mackenzie (Salisbury, NB) in third. Ellen “Hubba Bubba” Smith (Timberlea, NS) brought home the heat race win in her #76 PT Cruiser. The next event for Petty International Raceway is on Saturday, June 25th when the Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour makes its first of three stops on the high banked oval. The Petty 100 will also feature racing in the Extreme Window and Entrance System Street Stock, Mister Transmission Mini Stock and Leisure Days RV Bandolero divisions. Racing begins on June 25th at 6pm. About Petty International Raceway: Petty International Raceway is located on Highway 106, just 40 km west of Moncton, New Brunswick.
